Confluent Helps Swiggy Streamline Data Management for Better Customer Service

Swiggy is India’s pioneering, on-demand, delivery convenience service. Its easy-to-use platform powers the company’s mission to elevate the quality of life for millions of urban consumers. 

With over three billion orders delivered in 680 cities across India as of 2024, Swiggy has successfully pioneered the hyperlocal commerce industry, and it has done so with data insights that help it continually optimize service for its customers. But in order to use its data more efficiently, the team realized it needed to replace its open-source Apache Kafka® system with a solution that didn’t require as much management or necessitate building a whole new infrastructure. Confluent delivered on that requirement seamlessly.

Before Confluent, Swiggy’s data team used open-source Kafka to fuel its real-time data use cases. While the technology worked well, it required constant maintenance and management of the hardware—an investment the company didn’t want to continue. 

By transitioning from managing its own data infrastructure to using Confluent’s data streaming platform, Swiggy was able to free up valuable resources, reduce costs, and shift focus to more strategic areas like data governance.

Using the Confluent cluster for real-time predictions, recommendations, and analytics, Swiggy tackled a key challenge—managing asynchronous communications across the various services it offers. For example, when a customer opens the Swiggy app, the Confluent cluster powers the predicted SLA, providing an estimated delivery time to the customer.

For Swiggy, delivering real-time, targeted, and accurate information is critical, and Confluent’s platform provides the reliability and resilience they need to make that possible. 

Confluent’s Resilience Helps Swiggy Manage Peak Customer Demand 

During peak festival periods when demand surges, Swiggy relies on Confluent’s elastic scaling to ensure uninterrupted and seamless service for its customers. The data team can simply specify their capacity needs, and the platform handles the rest. In the past, the data team had to manage all of this manually. Now, they can achieve the same results with just one click.

"Business is inherently unpredictable, but the elasticity provided by Confluent enables us to adapt and execute on our future business roadmap with confidence,” says Agarwal.

Confluent also plays a crucial role in helping Swiggy map out lineage and understand how internal data systems are interconnected. It identifies and resolves any anti-patterns, streamlining complex workflows and improving system efficiency.

Swiggy is exploring Confluent’s managed Apache Flink® offering and built-in connectors. This will allow them to focus on driving business outcomes rather than managing or building custom processing solutions.
